Born in Holloway, London in Q4-1888 [Islington 1b:221] to Benjamin and Evelyn SIMPSON (née BAKER) of 22 Parolles Road, Islington.

1891 census...Herbert G.B. [2] was at 22 Parolles Road, Islington with his father Benjamin [31] an assistant ?, born South Australia, his mother Evelyn [30] born South Australia and his sister Daisy E.J. [4] born Eastbourne.

1901 census...Herbert [12] was at 23 Westfield Road, Hornsey with his parents (father now a bank clerk), sister Daisy and brother Harry [8] and sister Olive [6] both born in Hornsey.

In Q4-1910 in Cambridge, he married Dorothy GRAY.

1911 census...Herbert [22] was a stableman, living at 17 Warrington Street, Newmarket with his wife Dorothy [22] born Cambridge, and son Herbert [1] born Newmarket.


He enlisted in Bristol, in the Army Service Corps and then was transferred to the Tyneside Scottish

As he died of his wounds there is no sure way to identify exactly where and when he was wounded without his service records.
Following the Battle of Arras the Tyneside Scottish Brigade spent a period refitting and training. On the 7th October 1917 the Battalions entrained for the Ypres Salient. The 34th Division were to move into the line in the Poelcapelle. The Tyneside Scottish remained in the rear area, relieving the Tyneside Irish to take their place in the line 14th October 1917. They remained in the line till 20th October 1917.

Herbert is buried in Solferino Farm Cemetery, Belgium- Ref:I.B.43
and is also commemorated on the plaque in the New Astley Club, Fred Archer Way, Newmarket
